Christmas is almost here! The presents are wrapped, school’s out, and extended family is beginning to arrive. Check out our list of suggestions for family-friendly fun this weekend, or comment and let us know what we forgot!
1) The 4th Annual Texas Christkindl Market
This huge holiday market offers everything you could want – handmade gifts, ornaments, live music, marionette shows, and traditional German holiday fair. (Plus nachos! – It’s located right next to the Ballpark) Santa’s still in residence in his custom-built Santa Haus, and the adults can treat themselves to steins of German beer while the kids enjoy hot chocolate and apple cider. Great for extended family groups, you can even bring the pets! (Just make sure you keep them on a leash – owner’s are liable for any damage.)
2) Saturday Story Time at the River Legacy Living Science Center
This monthly activity group features a seasonal story circle, led by an Arlington children’s librarian. Suitable for all ages, a fun, festive craft session follows the story telling event. Best of all, it’s free! Space is limited, however, so make sure you RSVP. Story time begins at 11 am.
3) One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure at the UT Arlington Planetarium
Showing this Saturday at 1 pm, this fun family event takes us along with Big Bird, Elmo, and their new Chinese friend Hu Hu Zhu as the explore the stars and constellations. Kids will learn how to spot the North Star and the Big Dipper, and go on an imaginary tour of the moon’s landscape. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for kids, with children 3 and under admitted free.
4) The Best Christmas Pageant Ever at Theatre Arlington
This holiday classic will have you rolling in the aisles! During rehearsals for a church Christmas pageant, a well intentioned couple is driven nearly crazy as their mischievous cast of kids do everything they can to derail the pageant. Tickets are still available for the Saturday and Sunday performances, but parents should be aware that no children under 3 are permitted in the theater. Tickets are $19, $12 for kids up to 11, and advance tickets are available here.
5) Star Wars Miniland at the LEGOLAND Discovery Center
This interactive walk-through exhibit is sure to delight young Anakin Skywalkers and Princess Leias everywhere. Travel from the ancient domed city of Naboo to the desert planet Tattoine, and don’t forget to make time for the activities – kids have the chance to join in as exciting Podrace and help fight against the evil Droid Army in the interactive exhibit. Tickets are $21 at the door, or save by buying online at least 24 hours in advance. Kids under 2 are admitted free.
