Invisalign: The Pros and Cons

If you are living with crooked teeth, we have great news for you.

Our Arlington, Texas dental office has options for straightening your teeth that will have your smile dazzling in no time.

Invisalign is an alternative to traditional, bulky braces and is a great option for many people. However, like any procedure, there are pros and cons to Invisalign. Here are a few of the most common concerns and even some reasons why Invisalign might not be the best solution for you.

Pros of Invisalign:

Invisalign aligners are completely removable. You have to remove the trays for eating and before replacing them you have to brush and floss. This makes it easy to maintain your oral hygiene. Some patients even report that their oral hygiene has improved since having the aligners.

Invisalign is nearly undetectable. There is a reason the word Invisalign is so close to the word invisible. Most people won’t even know that you are going through orthodontic treatment and you can remove them for social events. They are the more aesthetically pleasing solution to metal braces.

They are comfortable. Because there are no wires or brackets against the inside of your mouth, the aligners are much more smooth and form fitting than metal braces.

Invisalign technology gives you a glimpse into the future. We have the ability to use 3-D simulation video that gives our patients an idea of the treatment goal prior to even starting. This is a big motivating factor to stay the course for the entire treatment time.

There are fewer emergency visits. Poking wires or broken brackets are uncomfortable and often dangerous. Invisalign lacks these harsh metal parts and emergency dental visits are a thing of the past. Plus, you take them out when playing sports, so sports injuries are greatly reduced as well.

Invisalign is FDA approved material. There is no concern over metal allergies, which is great news for people who have had to forego straight teeth due to allergies.

The time frame for treatment is greatly reduced. Braces can takes years for complete treatment. Invisalign is the answer for reducing this treatment time to sometimes just one year. This all depends on your individual situation, but a shorter treatment time is to be expected.

Cons of Invisalign:

Invisalign requires excellent cooperation. There is a commitment involved. If you don’t wear your aligners for the recommended hours per day, you can affect the ability to finish on time and get your desired results. Compliance is extremely important to the success of your Invisalign treatment.

Expect some tenderness in the first few days of each treatment. This is the case with metal braces as well as Invisalign aligners. Either method can cause some tenderness of teeth and gums. Invisalign, unlike braces, will not scratch or tear the inside of your cheek or lips.

They do have to be removed before eating. This can be a deterrent to those who don’t want to have to deal with taking them out all the time. It is recommended to brush and floss before putting them back in. The good news is that it is much easier to keep your teeth clean and healthy with Invisalign.

The cost for Invisalign. Invisalign is not an inexpensive solution.  The cost for Invisalign may be higher or lower than braces, it just depends on the amount of treatment needed. When compared to the price of traditional orthodontics, Invisalign is very competitive.

Sometimes speech can be impaired. Invisalign, as well as traditional braces, can cause temporary minor speech issues as your mouth becomes accustomed to the new appliances

You will have a new aligner to put in every 2 weeks. This doesn’t mean you will see the dentist every 2 weeks. However, you will have new pressure on your teeth every 2 weeks. Most patients experience some tooth discomfort for a day or two with each new set of aligners.

Depending on your unique needs, Invisalign can be a very effective method of straightening your teeth and correcting an imperfect bite. Keep in mind that Invisalign is an ever-evolving technique and requires the dentist to have a firm grasp of tooth movement using a removable appliance.
